Opportunity: Summer Fellowship

COSEE-Coastal Trends is looking to fill a summer teacher research fellowship position for this summer, 2010. The selected teacher will join a research team at the University of Maryland’s Horn Point Lab (Cambridge, MD) to study sources of nitrogen in Chesapeake Bay tributaries and create classroom resources based on this research.

Candidates should:
-Currently teach middle or high school science
-Have some background in pedagogy
-Be willing to learn about scientific research, work closely with a small team, and help conduct outdoor summer fieldwork (potentially long, hot, somewhat muddy days)

The fellowship includes:
-$4,500 stipend for 6-week research experience (June 24-August 6) and completion of lesson plans
-Housing at Horn Point Lab during the 6-week experience
-Travel expenses

Scholarship Opportunities – NSF Robert Noyes Scholarship Program

The National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program supports talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The Noyce Scholarship Track provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and academic programs for undergraduate STEM majors graduate students holding STEM degrees who earn a teaching credential and commit to teaching in high-need K-12 school districts.   The NSF Teaching Fellowship/Master Teaching Fellowship Track supports two groups:  STEM professionals who enroll as NSF Teaching Fellows in master’s degree programs leading to teacher certification, providing academic courses, professional development, and salary supplements while they fulfill a four-year teaching commitment in a high-need school district; and NSF Master Teaching Fellows, providing professional development and salary supplements for exemplary mathematics and science teachers to become Master Teachers in high-need school districts.  Deadline for letters of intent 2/9/10.  An online seminar providing more information about the program and applications will be held Wednesday, 2/3/10; to register for the webinar go to the NSF events calendar.

New Fellowship Program for Teachers at Under-Resourced Schools

The Society for Science & the Public (SSP) Fellows Program provides funds and training to help teachers at under-resourced schools guide students in performing high-quality independent scientific research. Fellows receive a stipend of up to $8,500 per year for up to four years, depending on proposed budget, demonstrated need, support of the school and needs of the student population.

Job Opportunity – Coral Reef Management Fellow, Puerto Rico

I.M. Systems Grou, a contractor to NOAA, seeks an individual to serve as a Coral Reef Management Fellow for Puerto Rico.  The two-year program, beginning January 2010 and ending in January 2012, will place an individual in Rincon, Puerto Rico.  The Fellowship Program is administered by NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program.The fellow’s primary responsibility will be to lead the development of an environmental education program for the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve (TPMR) that includes specific activities that support the implementation of the TPMR management plan.  The fellow will work with partners and the local community to develop and implement this program.
