Online PD Workshop for Educators: Why Do We Explore?

NOAA Ocean Exploration and Research Program Announces Why Do We Explore? , An Online Professional Development Workshop for Educators of All Grade Levels
June 21- July 2, 2010 (this is a repeat of the course offered in October 2009) in partnership with the College of Exploration

Join NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research for the second workshop in a series of educator professional development opportunities focused around NOAA’s new ship and America’s Ship for Ocean Exploration, the /Okeanos Explorer/. This workshop will introduce the new /Okeanos Explorer /Education Materials Collection built around the themes: Why Do We Explore?, How Do We Explore? and What Do We Expect to Find? Scientific presenters and education facilitators will work with participants to delve into the benefits of ocean exploration targeting climate change, energy, human health and ocean health. Interact with ocean explorers, converse and share classroom applications with other educators, and find a wealth of multimedia resources. We will introduce the first in a series of Leader’s Guides for Classroom Explorers entitled Why Do We Explore?, with its companion Initial Inquiry Lesson, To Boldly Go…, as well as additional lesson plans and other resources.

This workshop is free for all participants and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Educators will have the option to receive graduate credit (fee for the credit) or obtain a certificate of completion.

VitalVenture from GMRI

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute in collaboration with Maine Sea Grant has just launched a new online education resource, VitalVenture, an interdisciplinary watershed education curriculum that engages Maine students in grades 5-8 with a series of locally relevant, issue-based Watershed Experiences that deepen conceptual understanding and connection to place.

Each Watershed Experience includes a series of authentic, inquiry-based learning activities in which students observe, ask questions, investigate, take action, and deepen their scientific understanding and connection to their local watersheds. Sustained over four grades, VitalVenture Watershed Experiences provide students with a continuum of authentic, inquiry-based learning.

VitalVenture supports and extends the science skills and concepts students are introduced to during GMRI’s LabVenture! (5/6th grade) program and prepares students for practicing these skills in Vital Signs (7/8th grade). These programs and curriculum provide the tools and resources for teachers to ignite students’ interest in science and get them invested in locally relevant environmental issues.

The development of these Watershed Experiences was lead by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in collaboration with Maine Sea Grant and 31 Maine middle school educators. Watershed Experiences contributed by Maine Sea Grant are based, in part, on the Penobscot River Watershed Program, a collaborative project of Maine Sea Grant, the University of Maine Senator George J. Mitchell Center, and the Penobscot River Restoration Trust, working in partnership with Old Town Elementary School and the City of Old Town. VitalVenture is funded through the NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-Wet) Program.

Join Researchers Online on a Cruise to Study Plastic Debris in the Pacific

Join Oceanographic Research Vessel Alguita for a voyage to the North Pacific Gyre to study plastic marine debris. This summer the research team will sail to one of the most remote regions of the ocean to study human impacts on marine ecosystems.  Students and teachers are invited to join this voyage online and receive:

• Daily updates and images from the research vessel
• The opportunity to interact with the ship’s research team and other leading researchers to ask questions and share experiences
• Lessons, activities and creative ways to integrate the experience into the classroom curriculum
• A chance to interact with students from around the world to share information, perspectives and solutions to this global issue
